Our vision is:

To create a training centre for food-related employment, a leisure resource for local people and a vibrant visitor attraction demonstrating the link between food production and the landscape of the Shropshire Hills.

For Grow Cook Learn this vision builds on four years' experience of the Grow Cook Share project providing training in growing and cooking to local comm unities. In its later stages, the project launched Grow Cook Cater offering training and mentoring for the catering industry. We have identified a strong demand for developing employment opportunities in food-related industries. Successful models elsewhere demonstrate the importance of an appropriate physical base and the Discovery Centre is an ideal location centred in a thriving and varied local food economy.

For South Shropshire Housing Association the Discovery Centre is an opportunity to support a valued community asset and to develop education and training facilities benefitting local residents and growing employees for local businesses. It will also embody the Group’s aim to be a Great Community Partner developing policies for economic inclusion, resident involvement and training and employment.

Our vision relates positively to Shropshire Hills Sustainable Tourism Strategy identifying the area as: “a destination of discovery, which involves some effort on the part of visitors but where the effort can be greatly rewarded”. The Grow Cook Learn vision supports the Sustainable Tourism Strategy objective of “Delivering the Local Food Experience” including to:

  • Raise the quality and accessibility of catering available throughout the area for all budgets
  • Promote a range of opportunities for visiting, experiencing and purchasing from local food and drink suppliers
  • Strengthen the availability and creative use of local produce in catering outlets

Our plan is to build on the excellent facilities already available at the Centre while working towards a refurbishment that develops our “eat the view” theme.

Eat the View…

In the Café…
Where we will showcase the amazing wealth of produce grown and raised in the Shropshire Hills. Our menu will take you on a delicious journey across the landscape – literally, eating the view!

In the Exhibition…
Where you will get a flavour of life in the Shropshire Hills by finding out how local food production has shaped the surrounding countryside through the ages and created the landscape that we love today.

In the Shop…
Discover a range of gifts and local artisan crafts made in Shropshire and reflecting the beauty of the natural landscape. Enjoyed our café? Then take home your own tasty treat to remind you of the view.

In the Market Garden…
We are passionate about growing our own food – supporting health and well being and keeping us connected to the land and the seasons. Through community supported agriculture we will serve both the café and the community – you can’t get more local than that!

In the Training Centre…
South Shropshire is famous for its food. We will support the next generation of chefs, horticulturalists, food producers and retailers by creating a training centre for food-based employment.

Get a Taste for the area…
Our Visitor information will feature specialist producers, farm shops, B&B’s with a local food focus. From farm tours to food festivals, discover all that the Shropshire Hills has to offer
